In a ravaged and impoverished near-future, the salvation of virtual reality from corporate tyranny will depend on one quick-witted young gamer and his encylopaedic knowledge of 1980s pop culture.

The premise of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is appealing enough – at least, it was to me! – but I found its deft characterisation, well-drawn settings and gleeful imaginative exuberance to be completely irresistible. At one point while reading it I was reluctantly distracted by a growing awareness that my face was getting sore – from grinning.
Will readers who didn’t grow up in the Eighties find references to stuff like WarGames, The Last Starfighter or Brazil a barrier to their enjoyment of this thrilling book, or an enhancement of it? I’ve no idea. Try Ready Player One for yourself. I think it’s a BLAST.
