Useful stuff. I particularly hate changes in tense. See it a lot in competition entries, as well as flipping from first to third person. And although LOL and BTW and all that stuff can be fun to use in up-to-the-minute stories (and for comedy effect) I try to remember that I’d like my books to be around, getting read, decades from now and this stuff reeeeeeally dates!

For the same reason it was a really tough call, in Frozen In Time, on whether to screw down the dates so thoroughly to 1956 and 2009, but the way the story went, I had to. It was all about past and present and the present day end couldn’t be left vague. In 2029 some kid might be reading it, muttering: ‘iPod? What’s an iPod?’

    HAPPY NEW YEAR, CAVE DWELLERS!

I’m just a blog writer not a book writer but I do agree with the list. Another is saying ‘I’ to much. I think it was my English teacher when I was about 6 drummed that in, she said there should never be to many, ‘I’s when writing something because you look self obsessed. It’s always stuck and I do find myself counting them even now. Though it’s a bit hard when it’s a personal blog about reviews and things you’ve made :)
