I love books that are just full of nonsense and this here book is one of them. Here Be Monsters by Alan Snow is full ridiculous characters like Boxtrolls, Cabbageheads, The Man With the Iron Socks, Trotting Badgers, to name a few. The story takes place above and beneath the streets of Ratbridge where a young boy called Arthur is trapped by the evil Snatcher who is set to take over the town. With the help of more eccentric characters Arthur has to try and escape and save Ratbridge from the evil plots, of which there are many. Unlike many books with such crazy goings-on there is a tight plot, engaging characters (not just 2 dimensional), and plenty of laughs.
I had only just finished reading the book, back in 2005 when it first came out, and I found myself at an authors publicity event. Well, who should be signing books at a nearby table but Mr Alan Snow himself. A very nice chap, we spoke for a while and I came away with this momento. The good thing about getting illustrators to sign books is that, with an encouraging prod, they’ll often do a little drawing. I know I do!
