As a pilot for over twenty years it was my job not to crash into things. Occasionally accidents do happen though. I lost count of how many times I massacred birds with my various flying machines. I once had a chunk of ice the size of a grapefruit hit my windshield whilst I was flying at about 420 miles per hour! That was exciting. It had fallen from another aircraft that I was directly behind. The bang as it struck left my ears ringing for the best part of ten minutes!
I also once had a near miss with a big pink pig … that’s no lie. Honest. It was one of those helium balloons. It was floating along at about 8000 feet over Lincolnshire when it flashed past my cockpit. I was so surprised, I turned the aircraft around and flew past it again just to make sure that I wasn’t seeing things.
I bet the pilot of this aircraft had an interesting story to tell, though …
