Running the Risk
The monsters have been running me ragged recently. I’ve been racing from one event to another, with little time to grab more than a bite to eat and a few hours of sleep in the corner of my cell. However, I have managed to sneak occasional snatches of reading in here and there and have just finished reading the second in Ali’s fantastic Shapeshifter series.
Running the Risk has a different feel to the first in the series. As the reader, I quickly became aware that all was not well in the school for COLA kids, but the threat is vague through most of the book. The story is kept moving by Ali’s great characters and their fascinating abilities, but there is no obvious bad guy for you to yell ‘Boo! Hiss!’ at. Fear not. The final few chapters, after the villain finally surfaces are breathtaking, and the pace accelerates out of control, racing at breakneck speed towards a spectacular finish.
I found Running the Risk complimented Finding the Fox very well. I am beginning to understand why my daughter has been so obsessed with this series over the past few weeks. For those who like fantasy, but can’t be doing with elves and dwarves, this wins a big thumbs up.
